Bridging gaps, integrating responses - ideas and results

About Dr Raj Mohan Tella

I started as a cub copywriter. Direct marketing — the discipline where every word either worked or did not, and the results arrived in the post. There was no hiding. It was the best possible education.


From there — creative direction, strategic counsel, agency leadership. Clarion McCann, Ogilvy and Mather, Mudra-DDB. I led Indian advertising agencies into Sri Lanka, the UK, Italy, Spain and Portugal at a time when that was genuinely uncharted territory. I was driving digital adoption within agencies in the late 1990s — before most people in India had decided the internet was worth taking seriously.


In 2006 I moved into brand consulting. Fifteen years of working with founders, leadership teams and organisations on the problems that sit underneath the presenting ones.


In 2017 I completed a PhD in Marketing and Branding. Not to change direction. To prove why the direction was right.


In 2025 I launched The Merlin AI — a working demonstration of what applied AI architecture actually looks like when built for real business problems rather than imagined ones.

Fundamentals count, a 360 view aids homeruns

The width is deliberate.

I am occasionally asked to choose a lane. Strategy or creative. Consulting or execution. AI or brand.


I do not find the question useful.


The businesses I have worked with best have never needed a specialist. They needed someone who could see the whole picture — brand and operation, strategy and communication, AI capability and human judgement — and hold it steadily enough to know what to build and in what order.


That is a rare combination. I am aware of it. I have also spent four decades earning it.

A fair expectation.

In my earlier years, clients came into meetings having done their homework. Those who had not found out fairly quickly that it was a better idea.


That has not changed. What has is the pleasure I take in the process when both sides arrive prepared and genuinely engaged. The work at that level tends to be some of the most satisfying either party has done.

On AI and craft.

The craft of brand creation and communication still hinges on the power of persuasion. On genuine insight. On the ability to see what others miss and say it in a way that makes people act.


AI does not replace that. In the right hands it sharpens it considerably. I use it as a method ally — a way of making accumulated knowledge faster and deeper. Not a substitute for the knowledge itself.


The distinction matters more than most people currently understand. It will matter more still as the market matures.

Working principle.

A business becomes stronger when it understands itself better. When its knowledge travels. When its communication is coherent. When AI is used with judgement. When execution follows from clarity.


That is the work. It has always been the work. The tools evolve. The fundamentals do not.

Alumni of my firm have gone on to leading agencies across India and to Melbourne Business School and SPD Milan. I write when I have something worth saying — which is a different standard from writing because it is Tuesday.
